Sarawak Strengthens Role as Leader in Legacy-Driven Academic Events. Business Events Sarawak’s (BESarawak) month-long Academia Malaysia Advocacy Programme has firmly positioned the state as a frontrunner in legacy-driven academic conferences, drawing strong interest from Malaysia’s leading universities. The initiative highlighted Sarawak’s innovative legacy impact framework, underscoring how conferences and exhibitions can extend beyond academic discourse to shape public policy, uplift communities, advance sustainability, and inspire future generations of researchers and professionals.

According to BESarawak CEO Amelia Roziman, universities today are seeking more than just a platform for scholarly exchange; they want events that create meaningful, long-lasting change. “As Malaysia’s Legacy Capital for business events, Sarawak delivers on that promise,” she said, emphasizing the region’s commitment to ensuring conferences generate outcomes with real societal impact.

Jason Tan Chin Foo, Deputy CEO of BESarawak, and the BESarawak team engage with Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia to drive more legacy-driven events to Sarawak.

One of the programme’s key outcomes was the pledge from academic institutions to align future gatherings with Sarawak’s Post COVID-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030) and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs). Roziman noted that embedding legacy principles into events not only makes research more relevant but also drives cross-sector collaboration, attracts strategic funding, and enhances institutional reputation—ensuring benefits that extend well beyond the event itself.

Sarawak’s leadership in this field is powered by the Legacy Impact Master Action Plan 2023–2025 and the cutting-edge AI.LEGACY Intelligent Impact Management System, an AI-powered tool designed to precisely measure and enhance the outcomes of conferences and exhibitions.

Looking ahead, Sarawak’s appeal as a host destination is set to rise further with the upcoming launch of AirBorneo, a region-owned airline that will improve domestic and international connectivity, alongside the expansion of the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK), which will soon accommodate up to 14,500 delegates. Together, these advancements strengthen Sarawak’s position as the destination where academic research evolves into lasting societal, environmental, and economic legacies.
