Sunway Medical Centre, Sunway City (SMC) is set to mark World Heart Day 2025 with a community-focused celebration on Sunday, 27 September 2025, from 9 am to 1 pm at the Sunway Medical Centre Convention Centre, Level 4, Tower A. The event aims to unite healthcare professionals, patients, and the public in raising awareness about cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), which remain the leading cause of death globally. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), CVDs claimed 19.8 million lives in 2022, representing 32 per cent of all deaths worldwide, while Malaysia’s Ministry of Health reported 66,779 CVD-related deaths in 2021. These sobering statistics highlight the urgent need for preventive education, early detection, and healthier lifestyle practices.
In line with the global World Heart Day movement, SMC’s programmed will offer access to free screenings, health education, and real-life patient experiences. Awareness sessions will be led by Consultant Cardiologist Dr Richard Chan Tze Ming and Consultant Cardiologist & Electrophysiologist Dr Gary Lee Chin Keong, who will share insights on the management of coronary artery disease, hypertension, and heart failure, with a strong emphasis on prevention, lifestyle modification, and regular monitoring of heart health indicators such as blood pressure and oxygen levels.

Adding a personal dimension, patients from the Skim Jantung Negeri Selangor programme will share their inspiring recovery journeys, underscoring the importance of timely treatment and support. The event will also include a hands-on workshop on using automated external defibrillators (AEDs) and emergency response training, equipping attendees with lifesaving skills in cardiac emergencies. Visitors can also look forward to interactive wellness booths, complimentary health checks, and a demonstration by Samsung Malaysia Electronics on how wearable technology can aid in monitoring cardiovascular health in everyday life.
“Heart disease is not just a statistic, it is a reality for countless families in Malaysia and around the world. With greater awareness and preventive actions, many of these lives can be protected. World Heart Day is about reminding us to listen to our hearts — literally and figuratively — and to make health a priority,” said Tan Mei Shin, Senior Director of Business Development and Corporate Communications at SMC.

Reinforcing its commitment to excellence in cardiovascular care, SMC has been recognized as one of the top 250 hospitals worldwide in Newsweek World’s Best Hospitals, and ranked among the top 75 globally in cardiology and cardiac surgery in Newsweek’s Best Specialized Hospitals Asia Pacific in both 2024 and 2025. These accolades reflect SMC’s dedication to advancing heart health and supporting the community in preventing and managing cardiovascular diseases.
