Sarawak is poised to take the spotlight in the global scientific arena as it prepares to host the 17th International Conference on Materials Processing and Characterization (ICMPC 2025) from 27 to 29 November 2025 at the Imperial Hotel in Miri. This prestigious international conference will bring together world-renowned researchers, engineers, and academics from countries including the United States, Brunei Darussalam, India, and South Africa, to delve into the latest advancements in materials science and its pivotal role in shaping technological innovation and sustainable development. ICMPC 2025 marks a significant milestone as the event makes its debut in Malaysia, following previous editions held in the UK and India. The conference is hosted by Curtin University Malaysia in collaboration with the Sarawak Government, through the Ministry of Education, Innovation and Talent Development (MEITD), and India’s Gokaraju Rangaraju Institute of Engineering & Technology (GRIET), with vital support from Business Events Sarawak (BESarawak). More than just a scientific gathering, the conference aligns strategically with Sarawak’s Post COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, particularly in driving high-value manufacturing, downstream processing of resources such as rare earth elements, and the transition to a green economy driven by renewable energy.

YB Mayor Adam Yii, Mayor of Miri City Council and Chairman of the Miri Business Events Committee (MBEC), emphasised the importance of the conference in supporting Sarawak’s aspirations to become a high-income, innovation-driven economy. He noted that hosting ICMPC 2025 reflects Sarawak’s commitment to nurturing future-ready talent and fostering a robust ecosystem of research and development. The conference is expected to provide unparalleled opportunities for students, local researchers, and industries to connect with global thought leaders and access cutting-edge knowledge in materials science and sustainable technologies. Professor Vincent Lee Chieng Chen, Pro Vice-Chancellor, President and Chief Executive of Curtin University Malaysia, shared that it is an honour for the university to host such an influential global event, which aligns with Curtin’s mission of transforming communities through impactful research and international collaboration. Conference Chair Professor Sujan Debnath highlighted the scientific value of the event, calling it a “crucible for new ideas” that will shape the future of technology and sustainable development. Meanwhile, Amelia Roziman, CEO of BESarawak, noted that ICMPC 2025 exemplifies the power of legacy-driven business events, with the potential to create long-term impact for Sarawak in economic, social, and environmental spheres. As anticipation builds, ICMPC 2025 is set to be a transformative milestone for Sarawak, strengthening its position as a regional hub for innovation and sustainable growth.
