Sunway Medical Centre Hosts Global Experts to Advance Regional Paediatric Care at International Symposium. Sunway Medical Centre, Sunway City (SMC) recently hosted the International Paediatric Symposium 2025, themed “Paediatrics Without Borders: Bridging Subspecialties, Saving Lives,” uniting leading paediatric specialists from Malaysia, China, Singapore, and the United States. This hybrid-format symposium served as a significant platform for cross-border knowledge exchange, innovation, and collaboration to tackle pressing health challenges facing children across the Asia-Pacific region. The event was officiated by YB Dato’ Lukanisman Awang Sauni, Deputy Minister of Health, and supported by the Ministry of Health, Malaysia. Discussions at the symposium highlighted critical issues such as malnutrition, congenital conditions, childhood cancer, and pneumonia, which remain leading causes of mortality among children in the region. With Malaysia facing both undernutrition and rising childhood obesity, as well as underdiagnosis of childhood cancers, the need for integrated, specialist-led paediatric care has never been more urgent.

In response to this, experts from Sunway’s network of hospitals — including Sunway Medical Centre Damansara, Velocity, Penang, and Ipoh — joined forces with renowned institutions such as Fudan Children’s Hospital (Shanghai), Boston Children’s Hospital (USA), and KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital (Singapore) to advance holistic, patient-centred care. SMC’s Children’s Health and Development Centre, supported by specialised services like a 24-hour Children’s Emergency Department and SMART Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), was spotlighted as a regional model for multidisciplinary excellence. As Dr Seow Vei Ken, CEO of SMC, emphasised, “Quaternary service anchors the complexity of care across all 26 paediatric subspecialties, enabling integrated management of critical cases.” The symposium’s sessions explored critical care, oncology, cardiology, and chronic paediatric conditions, while also addressing regional disparities in access and training.

The event concluded with a strong call to action: to unite expertise and empathy in pursuit of a healthier future for every child. Dr Ng Lee Li, General Manager of Women and Children Services at SMC, reinforced this mission, stating, “It is through open dialogue, professional exchange, and deep empathy that we can reimagine the future of paediatrics.” Recognised as Malaysia’s top paediatrics provider for three consecutive years by Newsweek, Sunway Medical Centre remains committed to building a compassionate, world-class paediatric ecosystem that serves not only Malaysia, but the broader region.
