The Mission GreenPossible: 100 Million Trees by 2025 campaign was officially launched today in Kuala Lumpur’s Glasshouse at Seputeh with the help of Touch ‘n Go Group’s Touch ‘n Go eWallet and Yayasan Hijau Malaysia, an organisation under the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources. The launch was officiated by Dato’ Indera Mohd Ridza Bin Awang, Director General of the Peninsular Malaysian Forestry Department, Mr. Alan Ni, Chief Executive Officer of TNG Digital Sdn Bhd, and Encik Amin Abdullah, CEO of Yayasan Hijau Malaysia.

Mission GreenPossible aims to contribute towards environmental conservation through Yayasan Hijau Malaysia’s efforts in planting more trees, all of which are under the purview of the lead agency, Forestry Department of Peninsular Malaysia.  Through this collaboration, users can donate towards the cause in a seamless yet paperless way by using the Touch ‘n Go eWallet app. The interesting part of the contribution journey is each donation will contribute towards the growth of a virtual tree that can be viewed and tracked on the campaign’s dedicated microsite, through the app or web.  For every 100% grown virtual tree, a batch of actual trees will be planted by Yayasan Hijau Malaysia.  Upon planting the first batch of actual trees, the virtual tree will then restart to allow users to grow more virtual trees, further driving the planting of more actual trees.  The mission is to get Malaysians to come forward together, donate and strive to conserve Mother Nature. In this regard, Touch ‘n Go Group will also donate alongside the Malaysian public in its quest to ensure a greener Malaysia for future generations.

Categorised under the sustainability principles of Living Sustainably with Touch ‘n Go eWallet, the Mission GreenPossible: 100 Million Trees by 2025 campaign supports the Touch ‘n Go Group’s sustainability framework, which is aligned with the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and centred around 4 pillars – Tech 4 Good, Treating People Fairly, Digital Inclusion, and Our Planet. Specific under the Our Planet pillar, the Group strives to take appropriate measures to achieve neutral carbon status by 2050, and at the same time, support the preservation and capture of carbon in established carbon sinks through efforts such as reforestation, mangrove restoration, and preservation of ecosystems.

“We strive to achieve net positive in all we do. This campaign not only benefits Touch ‘n Go Group’s sustainability goals but also helps to address the need for us, as a business to empower Malaysians with the knowledge and actions which facilitate efforts to achieve a cleaner, greener planet for our future generations,” said Alan Ni, Chief Executive Officer of TNG Digital Sdn Bhd.

“This collaboration with Yayasan Hijau Malaysia is indeed meaningful as we see our company as part of the sustainability ecosystem, and we have a part to play in ensuring that Mother Earth continues to grow healthily. We encourage all our users to contribute and experience growing a virtual tree through the Touch ‘n Go eWallet app today,” Ni added.

The Greening Malaysia Programme: National 100 Million Tree Planting Campaign serves as a national action plan which aims to plant 100 million trees by the year 2025. With the theme of “Our Trees, Our Life”, it is a 5-year initiative under the purview of the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources, along with lead agencies under the Ministry such as the Forestry Department of Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah Forestry Department, Forest Department Sarawak, Forest Research Institute Malaysia, and Yayasan Hijau Malaysia.

Launched on 5 January 2021, this campaign aims to raise awareness on the significance of forests and foster appreciation among the public. It also aims to ensure 54% of land area in Malaysia would be covered with forest. To date, a total of 46 million trees, comprising over 1,300 species have been planted nationwide under this campaign. There is a remainder of 54 million trees to be planted in order to achieve the target of 100 million trees by 2025.

Chief Executive Officer of Yayasan Hijau Malaysia, Encik Amin Abdullah said, “I believe in adopting a holistic approach where the government, NGOs and private sector need to establish strong cooperation in ensuring the success of The National 100 Million Tree Planting Campaign”.

“I strongly believe that the Touch ‘n Go Group will remain committed to fulfill their social responsibilities by utilising innovative strength to achieve well-being of society, the environment, and ultimately, the world. This translates into efforts towards conserving the country’s biodiversity while improving the quality of the natural environment, all of which would help address the broader issue of climate change.”

“Hence, in order to boost overall productivity, involvement of all parties is crucial. “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.” Private companies should come forward to be equally involved in the success of the programme as the call for preservation of the environment remains a shared responsibility by members of society in achieving the national objective of reducing Carbon Footprint and to achieve Net Zero Carbon by 2050.”
