KUALA LUMPUR — Embarking on a home renovation represents one of the most substantial financial and personal investments an individual can make. Yet, beneath the excitement of selecting interior designs and comparing contractor quotations lies a complex maze of safety, legal, and regulatory considerations that many homeowners overlook. Addressing these critical issues head-on, the recent HOMEDEC Industry Dialogue 2.0 brought together key leaders from Malaysia’s premier building and design associations to issue a timely warning: homeowners must look far beyond price tags when planning their renovation projects.
Four Crucial Pillars Highlighted at HOMEDEC Industry Dialogue 2.0
Organized under the HOMEDECares initiative by C.I.S. President Dato’ Vincent Lim, the high-level dialogue featured heads of prominent bodies, including the Malaysian Institute of Architects (PAM), the Malaysian Institute of Interior Designers (MIID), the Malaysian Interior Industry Partners Association (MIIP), and the Selangor and Wilayah (KL) Electrical Home Appliances Dealers Association (SWEDA). Building upon previous discussions that tackled online renovation scams, this year’s forum expanded the conversation to encompass unverified overseas operators, unauthorized structural alterations, and non-compliant electrical goods entering the local market. Industry experts stressed that engaging unqualified individuals or bypassing local building approvals can lead to severe financial losses, incomplete projects, and long-term legal complications when selling properties or securing insurance.
The panellists outlined four essential pillars for safe renovations: verifying professional credentials through official registers such as Lembaga Arkitek Malaysia (LAM) and the CIDB portal scrutinizing quotations based on scope, material specifications, and clear contracts rather than choosing the lowest bidder; ensuring local authority approvals are obtained for structural alterations to protect property value; and making product safety non-negotiable by demanding valid SIRIM certifications.
Safeguarding Consumer Investments and Industry Integrity
By raising consumer awareness and leveling the playing field for responsible businesses, the dialogue underscored a shared vision: protecting homeowners ultimately safeguards the integrity and future growth of Malaysia’s entire home improvement industry.
